Incase / Picture Perfect With Ziyah Gafic

February 21st, 2012

Ziyah Gafić was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He began his professional photography career after graduating from Sarajevo University with a degree in Comparative Literature. Traveling extensively since 1999, Gafić’s photographs tell the stories of societies in conflict and transition.

Gafić’s photographic composition reflects his view that photography works as a means to producing empathy, encouraging viewers to draw their own conclusions about the narratives within the images. Gafić’s latest project, “Quest for Identity,” consists of photographs of objects that the victims of the Bosnian War carried with them when they were killed. He also recently completed “Troubled Islam,” a series of photographs from Muslim countries around the world that have been torn by ethnic conflicts and fraternal warfare.

In this episode of Picture Perfect, Gafić is on assignment in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to document and demystify notions about Saudi Arabian women. Picture Perfect gets an inside look at his process and work to capture compelling portraiture and interviews of his subject matter.

Be sure to check out our exclusive bonus footage, in which Gafić photographs and interviews Salwa Shaker, the first Saudi woman to appear on television.

Introducing Incase for Shepard Fairey

February 13th, 2012

Incase has officially released the Shepard Fairey collaboration which will be coming soon to Canada. Check out what they had to say about it below…

We are proud to announce our latest project with visionary artist Shepard Fairey. New for Spring, Incase for Shepard Fairey is a capsule collection of accessories for Apple users featuring work from one of the world’s most influential street artists. As a cultural provocateur, social critic and artist, Fairey’s striking illustrations have created some of the most enduring cultural memes in modern times.

The collection includes a range of bags and products for MacBook, iPhone and iPod touch adorned with a selection of bold patterns and illustrations emblematic of peace and harmony. The three designs, Elephant, Ornament and Pattern, turn signature Incase products into mobile works of art imbued with social context and commentary that speak to ideals of both the artist and the user who carries them.

“The artworks that comprise my series for Incase all overtly or sublimely reflect the concept of Peace,” said Fairey. “Peace seems like a simple idea, but evidence of its fragility is far too visible. I believe peace, beauty and harmony are not only related, but intertwined. Visual symbols of peace manifest similarly in many different cultures, transcending language and reminding us of the basic loves and needs we all have in common. Peace is a struggle, but whether the images are ornamental, hopeful, or cautionary, this series promotes harmony.”

“Shepard is a great friend and artist who has been able to rise above convention and communicate subversive ideas to a wide and receptive audience,” stated Damon Way, Incase Chief Brand Officer. “As an artist who navigates freely between the street, fine and commercial art worlds, we admire and are inspired by his work and are excited to provide consumers with accessible and functional Shepard Fairey artistry through the collection.”

HUF / Trapped Indoors With Zander Mitchell

February 13th, 2012

Push.ca had the chance to catch up with HUF rider, Zander Mitchell, check it out and enjoy!

Skateboarding is skateboarding. We all love skateboarding, and we all love watching skateboarding. Fact. Another fact? It’s easy to tell when someone is way better at skateboarding than most people. Some have natural talent, some have drive and determination, and others just have a mixture of the two. Some you just love to watch and others you just don’t care. Alexander Mitchell is one of these people. At just 17 years old, he’s already impressing people everywhere with his effortless skating and style. I caught up with Zander to ask him about his current state of arrangements.

So, Zander. does anyone call you Alexander anymore? Your mom?
Yeah, my mom still calls me Alexander. My brother Stuart does too.

Fair enough. Where are you living at the moment?
New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia? It’s tropical there this time of year, right?
Yeah it’s amazing, it was -14 last night. It’s only -1 today though, somehow there’s no snow.

So what you’re saying is… skating outside isn’t the easiest during the winter?
Yeah, I usually only get to skate a few times outside from January until March. I’ve skated three times since the end of December.

How do you deal?
Skyrim, dank, beer.

Skyrim eh… what level are you?
I’m level 30; I’ve had it since Christmas (laughs). It’s like a Lord of the Rings-type video game, pretty nerdy.

Don’t you worry, I know all about Skyrim. I tend to plunder every dungeon and cave I can find – ridding the land of scum.
Hell yeah, same.

What are you, a Warrior? Mage? Thief?
Thief, I steal everything in sight. I’ll pickpocket everyone.

Next time I’m around you, I’ll remember to check my pockets. Anyway…so, you don’t get to skate much I guess… is it killing you inside?
It’s definitely crushing, but I shouldn’t really be skating anyways… I’m trying to heal a broken toe before March break.

Is there an indoor park at least?
Yeah. Three hours away in Moncton, New Brunswick. It’s pretty fun, good mini ramp. I went a few weeks ago.

Three hours away! So as an amateur skater with a bunch of great sponsors, you have to drive a combined six hours to go skateboard?
Yeah dude, I have to get out of here! I’m trying to go to San Francisco for a few weeks in March.

You definitely should. Where all did you go last year? Do you spend anytime in Nova Scotia?
I went on a Quiksilver trip in July where we went to Vancouver, Kelowna, Penticton, Kaslo, Calgary and Edmonton. I was in Montreal from June until the end of August in between the Quiksilver BC trip and a Muskoka Woods trip in August. Good times!

So that’s where you got all that footage. People were loving your Quiksilver edit on them Internets.
I had to come back to Nova Scotia to finish high school. Yeah, people told me they were stoked on that skating but bummed on the music.

Well, dubstep tends to do that. Other than SF, what other plans are you working on?
True. Right now it looks like I’m going back to Van in May with Quiksilver. Might be heading out to Manitoba and Winnipeg for a Quiksilver trip in July too.

You’ve got it all lined up. Quiksilver’s got your back, who else hooks it up?
Habitat, HUF, Thunder, Spitfire, and Pro Skates.

Well, Zander, your star is on the rise. Just get the hell out of Nova Scotia.
I’m trying! (laughs)

If you don’t get out of Nova Scotia, you’ll be trapped in Skyrim forever.
I’m already a full-fledged addict.
